Next up in our series shining a spotlight on Brillect team members is none other than Sam Mathiowetz. She’s sharing her story of how Brillect’s value of Taking Care of People has impacted her journey as she navigates her career and motherhood.
Taking Care of People Comes to Life
When Sam Mathiowetz first met with Brillect co-founder Kelly Weight back in 2021, she knew there was something special about the company. Even during their first meeting over a cup of coffee, Sam felt a level of authenticity, warmth and genuine interest in her, and her career goals, that left a lasting impression. Most notably, Kelly was keenly focused on what Sam needed and wanted out of her career and life as a busy mom – not just what position Brillect needed to fill.
“Kelly challenged me to think about what brings me joy in life at work and at home,” said Sam. “I could see the company’s value of Taking Care of People come to life in real-time.”
Leaving the Door Open to New Possibilities
While Brillect didn’t have the right opening for Sam at the time, she continued to keep the company on her radar screen. The stars aligned in 2022 when she checked back in with Kelly, and the two discussed what a role might look like for Sam at Brillect at this stage of her life.
Sam officially joined the Minneapolis, MN-based talent solutions firm as a Business Operations Associate, a role that matched her interest in accounting, while also dipping her detail-oriented toes into something new – operations.
The new role checked all the boxes for Sam’s home life, too. As a working mom, Sam was looking for flexibility and a family-oriented company that would provide challenging, interesting work while allowing her to find balance.
Sam was able to work remotely, with flexibility, while managing the company’s bookkeeping, financial reporting and contract administration. According to Sam, “There’s a level of comfort and overall feeling at Brillect that all of my colleagues want the best for me.”
Soaring to New Heights
A self-described creature of habit, Sam also appreciates her leaders’ encouragement to spread her wings and try new things, expand her skill set and take on new roles. “They see and appreciate what I’m capable of before I see it myself,” said Sam. “I can get really comfortable and content in the here and now, but they push me to grow.”
2024 has been all about change for Sam. She had her second baby in May and is also taking on a new role that allows her to dig more deeply into her love for accounting, specifically around the areas of reporting and forecasting. “I’m in the thick of motherhood with a toddler and new baby and Brillect has been there to support me inside and outside the office,” said Sam.
Connecting for Life
As the lead accountant for Brillect, Sam has had a front-row seat to Brillect’s rapid growth. While a lot has changed since the company’s early days, Sam says the camaraderie, connectedness and close working relationship of the Brillect team has remained the same.
“Whether you’re an employee, a consultant or a client, the people at Brillect really do take care of each other and stay connected for life,” said Sam. “Our team looks out for another, and we work really well together in ways I’ve never experienced at other jobs.” While Sam works remotely most of the time, she enjoys the occasional days back in the office environment to truly catch up with the team. She says Brillect’s Operations/Finance team, in particular, has something special that makes every meeting enjoyable.
Between her new role and a new baby, Sam has a lot of exciting this going on in 2024. In the midst of juggling it all, she’s excited to be working with a company and colleagues who actively practice their value of taking care of people.
